2,300-year-old Sunken Ship Discovered off Egypt's Al-Alamein Coast

An Egyptian archaeological mission, working under the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, has announced the discovery of a sunken ship approximately 650 meters off the coast of the al-Alamein area in the Mediterranean Sea.
The sunken ship dates back to the 3rd century BCE and contains hundreds of pottery vessels, including a significant number of imported amphoras. These vessels originated from Rhodes Island in Greece and were primarily used for storing wine. This discovery underscores the area's involvement in the expansive Mediterranean trade networks of ancient times. The North Coast of Egypt during the Greco-Roman Period was notably bustling, boasting about 30 sites along the coast that served as ports and cities to facilitate the movement of ships and individuals headed to Egypt's capital, Alexandria.
