The Egyptian-German archaeological mission working in the Matariya area have had another successful season with new archaeological material being unearthed.

The discovery includes 3 tombs from the Roman Period, 3 other individual tombs from the Persian Period, and 16 tombs from the Byzantine and Coptic Periods.

Papyrus Waziri 1 is now on display at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. It is considered the largest and most complete papyrus in hieratic script discovered in the Saqqara necropolis. The papyrus was found inside the coffin of an individual called Ahmose from the Ptolemaic Period (305-30 BCE), during the excavations of an Egyptian mission headed by Dr. Mostafa Waziry, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in May 2022.

A new scientific study using CT scanning and 3D printing found new information about a mummy stored in the basement of the Egyptian Museum. The mummy known as the "golden mummy" had been stored underground for more than a century before it was analyzed. The study's findings were published on January 24, 2023, in the journal Frontiers in Medicine by Egyptian radiologist Dr. Sahar Saleem, Professor of Radiology at Cairo University.
